What foreclosure auction, a lender, senior, junior, or the HOA foreclosing to collect amounts due. If it was the HOA and a California property I would claim they took their shot with the foreclosure and under California's one action rule they are tough out of luck with amounts related to the previous owner.

As for their fees for other crap not directly related to the previous owner but to your transaction, I consider them totally unreasonable and would let them defend them in small claims court. Finally the abuse by HOA's has gotten out of hand so send a letter to the do nothing political hack in your district and a copy to the local press demanding that the HOA overlords have some new controls placed on them to prevent such abuses.

And next time add getting all this info from the HOA as part of your due diligence before you bid.:-)
