Data providers such as Realist and DataQuick got tired of reporting zero for a sale amount so they purchase a data feed from the county that shows the non-disclosed information. Remember the information is not private, just non-disclosed. Anyone can go to the counter with the recorded document number and learn the price paid.

I think you were wrongly advised at the counter regarding the white out. How else are you to block the numbers if you don't white it out?
