Depends on the nature of the HOA lien...recurring vs. non-recurring

If the special assessment is for a non-recurring expense that occurred prior to your purchase of the property at the trustee’s sale then you are not liable for it.

However, if the expense or debt is of a recurring nature, then you are liable for your proportionate share of it, from the date when you took ownership of the property.
