Landlord is losing house and disappeared... when are we out?Odd situation. Our lease of a house in the suburbs of Los Angeles ended last month. But one month before, we found out the house we have been renting is being foreclosed on from the owner's manager. He said the owner felt terrible about us having to leave, and that the owner could not collect rent during the process, so the good news is we could stay until it was all over and don't have to pay rent. :-D Problem is... when is it over? We have seen no notices or anything, although I don't even know if they have to mail it, or post it on the door, or put an ad in the paper, or what? We can't reach the landlord or his manager anymore. Process servers came looking for the owner a few weeks ago, then left after we explained who we were and how we didn't know how to reach the landlord. The owner's manager (owner speaks no english so we only met him once, else called a number to tell the manager when he could collect the rent) stopped collecting mail, and we have a stack of letters from banks and equity companies a foot high. I won't open his mail, as that is illegal. But I saw an "instrument number" re a "trustee sale" thru the window of one envelope. Is there a way I can use that to find out if an auction has been scheduled? We're happy to stay without having to pay rent, but a little notice would be good to know when we need to leave, so we have time to find a new house to rent! Any help is greatly appreciated.
