: : Does anyone else use EarthViewer for scoping out properties and neighborhoods? It's the software used to show satellite images of Iraq that every news agency is using.
: : We use this quite often. It especially comes in handy when we're looking at properties we could not otherwise travel to such as Seattle, WA and Orlando, FL. I like the nVidia version which lets you tilt and rotate the image to see terrain like mountains and valleys.
: : If you're not familiar with it here's a link showing snapshots of a "fly-in". Enjoy.

: Kawika,
: I find aerial views too limiting.for what I want to see when looking at property. And I can't imagine ever buying property out of state where you need to depend on someone else to manage everything for a fee.
: Yes, I admit there's a certain novelty looking at the earth on high, but after a few minutes I wonder about its utility since I would still need a regular photo to really determine curb appeal and other property details.

Ward,

Thanks for the reply, we're new to REI so we have a lot to learn. I agree this could never replace a real visit. We just use it to classify some properties. I actually never thought of looking at the roofs, too blurry.

The out of state thing was when we were looking to move out of California but my 5yr old got accepted at a great school so that didn't happen so S.D. is stuck with us. :) That's why we're looking at investing here although we have two leads in Florida and we have family there so they may be a resource for management. It's going to be challenging investing in S.D. but fun.

Where the images were useful for us was when someone said the property was "near water" or "has a great view" and we find there's a 1,000' mountain in the way or it was right next to a water treatment plant it kinda put things in perspective for us.

Ward :: We're still wondering if we can get into your March schedule for the 3-day. I replied to your email with no response yet, guess us non-students are still sitting at the bottom of the queue. :)

Cheers.
Kawika Ohumukini
