: I was talking to a person that is in the process of homesteading some property. (not adverse possession)I was told that the property has to be federally owned, ie:BLM or other; have to improve the property, ie; build home (he built a small shack on his; pay the taxes for 10 yrs & live on the property for the same 10 yrs.(he visits the shack on wknds, but receives mail there on a regular basis)You also have to establish your property boundaries, have it surveyed & marked before filing for deed. Is this true?

Lillie:
Congress abolished the homesteading of land in 1976 with the passage of the Federal Lands Act. There used to be land from various federal agencies thay you could get for living on it, etc. But no more. BLM now sells all their land at fair market value. For complete information do a google search on "Homesteading on Federal Land" about the third post that comes up is a complete informational post put out by bLM explaining the entire situation.

Good Luck,

Bill H
