A property in severe disrepair might sell for less than land value... which you can still fix and sell it at profit. It just depends on how much you want to tackle. You can get a rough idea of what things cost, looking through a copy of the Marshall & Swift book... or hunting on groups.google.com for people who had similar questions. Be willing to trust your gut instincts. Would you do a job for $XX? (I don't always get 2nd or 3rd estimates on repairs. If the price sounds realistic, I may just sub the job out on the first quote, and move on to other decisions. It just saves time.)
