Using a self directed IRA

Posted by Eugene on November 14, 2001 at 7:53 PM

Professor Ward,

Is there a simple way that money in a self directed IRA can be used to buy tax liens, foreclosures etc.?

I have found no bank, institution or broker (in Corpus Christi, Texas) that would do real estate transactions with IRA money. Bank of America said the reason why was that at the end of the year the trustee has to make an evaluation of the items in an IRA and inform Uncle Sam about the accounts value. Evaluating real estate would be very difficult, time consuming and thus be very expensive.

Thank You,
