Homesteading on federal lands...In Reply to: homesteading property posted by Lillie on December 30, 2003 at 2:50 PM : I was talking to a person that is in the process of homesteading some property. (not adverse possession)I was told that the property has to be federally owned, ie:BLM or other; have to improve the property, ie; build home (he built a small shack on his; pay the taxes for 10 yrs & live on the property for the same 10 yrs.(he visits the shack on wknds, but receives mail there on a regular basis)You also have to establish your property boundaries, have it surveyed & marked before filing for deed. Is this true? =================== Lillie, You're reciting the federal requirements to acquiring title to dormant federal property via federal homesteading rules. The federal program differs from each state's homesteading rules. Here in CA homesteading isn't a way of acquiring property as much as it is safeguarding your existing home from a judicial foreclosure by a judgment creditor. Hope this helps.
