: I was talking to a person that is in the process of homesteading some property. (not adverse possession)I was told that the property has to be federally owned, ie:BLM or other; have to improve the property, ie; build home (he built a small shack on his; pay the taxes for 10 yrs & live on the property for the same 10 yrs.(he visits the shack on wknds, but receives mail there on a regular basis)You also have to establish your property boundaries, have it surveyed & marked before filing for deed. Is this true?

Lillie,

You're reciting the federal requirements to acquiring title to dormant federal property via federal homesteading rules.

The federal program differs from each state's homesteading rules. Here in CA homesteading isn't a way of acquiring property as much as it is safeguarding your existing home from a judicial foreclosure by a judgment creditor.

Hope this helps.
