I'd say just shrug it off, and keep doing business with people who want work from you. You'll find them if you keep shopping.

Ward has explained before, that contractors can get a "my sh** don't stink" attitude, when they get too many referrals and too much business.

For small under $100 jobs, I just pay cash and don't ask for a receipt. They like that, and I've found these little cash-basis subcontractors to be responsive.
