Getting a permit after the fact....In Reply to: upgrade posted by rick on July 08, 2003 at 3:58 PM
: I just found a property that shows in the city as a 2 bed, 1.5 bath, but it really is a 3Bed, 2bath property. (it was upgraded) Anyways, would I be able to sell it as a 3bed 2bath, or would I have to get a permit from the city first, and about how much would it cost to get that permit? Rick, Did you buy the property as a foreclosure? Otherwise the owner may be liable to you for not disclosing the non-permitted work. More and more the cities are establishing a permit archive on-line that go back 10 or more years, allowing prospective buyers to check out the permit history of your house. If you think the lack of a permit will adversely affect your future dealings with the house then ask your permit department what it will cost. Hopefully the improvements were done within specs and all you need to pay for is the skipped permit. In our area the penalty is a doubling of the original permit fee. Follow Ups: Post a Followup:
