If a bidder is willing to bid so strongly that they will take the bid up to very close to retail value yet not end up being the final bidder, they have effectively put the competition in a position of putting their funds in a property where they will have no effective return. If the competition does that enough times, why will they continue? Not a bad strategy, but not for the faint of heart. BTW, I have no connection to Mr. Metcalf, I just find the strategy interesting.
