Thanks for the memories..In Reply to: Witnessed my 1st auction posted by Sean Wagle on March 21, 2002 at 7:07 PM : I thought I'd quit reading about this, and see first hand what goes on. : It's not quite what I expected in terms of bidding. No "Do I hear $xxx?" from the auctioneer. It was all based on the cries. Although, I suppose at a trustee's sale there is no "cut" for them, so they don't care how high the bids go. Not like an antique auction. : There were about 40 people in attendance, but after the list for bankrupcy actions was read, only 1 property remained to bid for. Just 3 or 4 people were interested in it, and it went for $8K over the opening bid. The whole thing took about 10 minutes. : Are there any strategies involved in which auctions to attend? Such as go the day before/after a holiday, or when the weather is really bad? That might cut down on the number of vult^h^h^h^h bidders. Or will bidders crawl through snow and lightning to get to a good deal? :-) : I get the impression you really need to be prepared at the sale. Have a list of prospects, be ready to bid on any of the ones not in bankrupcy. =•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•= Sean, you made smile with your comments about the best day to attend an auction. I once got the same crazy notion that bad weather would cause my competition to stay indoors, dry and warm. That was until one day, when we had some really horrid weather. The sky was dark, the wind was really blowing and the rain was so furious it made you think we were on a movie set of “Monsoon”. Boy, was I licking my chops! And to make the deal even sweeter, the sale was being held way out in the boonies—where no sale had ever been held before. Man, I knew I was coming home with the bacon this time. Yup, you guessed it. EVERYBODY in the business—even people I only see once a year appeared! And when we all realized that everyone there thought that no one else would be there, because of the abominable weather, we started to laugh until we cried. It really was hilarious. And to cap it all off, not one deal went to sale. They were all canceled or postponed. I’ve tried to steal a deal the day before Christmas, January 2nd, and just before and after every other holiday imaginable to no avail. Always MORE attendees than normal. Anyways Sean, thanks for sparking some goofy memories in an old codger.
