Witnessed my 1st auction

Posted by Sean Wagle on March 21, 2002 at 7:07 PM

I thought I'd quit reading about this, and see first hand what goes on.

It's not quite what I expected in terms of bidding. No "Do I hear $xxx?" from the auctioneer. It was all based on the cries. Although, I suppose at a trustee's sale there is no "cut" for them, so they don't care how high the bids go. Not like an antique auction.

There were about 40 people in attendance, but after the list for bankrupcy actions was read, only 1 property remained to bid for. Just 3 or 4 people were interested in it, and it went for $8K over the opening bid. The whole thing took about 10 minutes.

Are there any strategies involved in which auctions to attend? Such as go the day before/after a holiday, or when the weather is really bad? That might cut down on the number of vult^h^h^h^h bidders. Or will bidders crawl through snow and lightning to get to a good deal? :-)

I get the impression you really need to be prepared at the sale. Have a list of prospects, be ready to bid on any of the ones not in bankrupcy.
