I've been in a similar position recently. I found it easy enough to contact both the lien holder and their lawyer representing them in the foreclosure - but neither would tell me how much remained on the loan. I was unable to make direct contact with the owner (who had walked away), or else I would have tried (maybe stupidly - I'm new at this) to settle it with a conference call or office visit. It was easy enough to guess the amount due by calculating the original loan and the prevailing interest rate at the time. I never did succeed in dealing before the auction or exactly determining the amount due. Next week is the auction.
