If you want to be really safe hire an eviction attorney and follow what they say. These old owners might try to turn things around on you if you just take over and change locks. It's a toss up based on whether you want to take the risk or not? You might want to take pics, document and change the locks regardless and see what happens after that? Obviously their goal is to shake you down for money so it's a matter of how determined they are.
