can we just walk away?

Posted by jay on March 12, 2010 at 12:14 AM

HI
I live in RI and have a question. We are upside down on our mortgage and can no longer afford to keep paying it. We are current but it is getting harder. I spoke with an attorney and we are discussing options at this time, but can we just walk away from our home? I know we will have a black mark on credit but we can not do this anymore. What are the reprecussions regarding taxes at the end? Also can we just stop paying and rent? I read this on another post? We pay $ 2300 a month and to rent would be $1000< saving us $1300 a month and allowing us to pay bills and catch up...help!!
