: If at all possible, linger around and see if you can talk to a neighbor. That gives you really good information, they usually know if the occupants have moved out. Obviously looking through the windows helps if there are no cars in the driveway. And check to see if gas meter is running. You can call the electric company and pretend that you are buying and see if the utilities are turned on.

Have a close look at the electric meter
and write down the usage numbers in the display.

When you return just check to see if any
additional power has been used.


Another way is to simply turn off the circuit breakers.
If someone is using the house they would likely
turn them back on and leave it that way.

Same with the water meter.
