can Self Directed IRA pay for airfare if buying out of state?

Posted by reza on February 20, 2010 at 4:16 PM

i live in SoCal and would like to buy a rental property in north carolina. of course i'd like to check first the property before i buy. i heard in a r/e club meeting that this is a prohibited transaction. is that correct? it's reasonable to assume investors will not buy w/o seeing the property first. and there are expenses involved in doing due diligence. i just find it hard to believe that the irs will frown on this. we're not talking about expensive first class tickets here. just regular couch seat. nothing fancy. irs allows this on a 1031 exchange. why not on a sdira r/e purchase? please share your thoughts, experience, or wisdom on this. it would be very much appreciated.
