I think your nose is working fine. May I suggest if the auctioneer is someone that isn't familiar with you that you remind them that California law requires them to cry out and that doesn't mean quietly.

I do this when they are checking my funds and I tell them it is my policy to record everything so please call it out loudly and clearly, and I let them see my recorder.

We didn't actually use it but one time it was accidentally turned on and it had a directional mike, and when we noticed it at lunch we played it and found it had caught some old timers scheming to distract us with a phony offer to the side while the auctioneer called out(not to loudly of course) the property we were interested in. Didn't work because we were right in front and wouldn't move.

Many years ago when I was new hanky-panky was the norm and this helped us to break into the game. The resentment I could live with, the getting screwed I couldn't. And you mentioned a private lender and those wanting the property played the most games.
