If needed, file the police report. If there was a discussion with the prior owner, note it in both reports. Let the insurance company pay you now for your loss (minus deductable) and let them deal with the former owners. Nothing vindictive about that. By the way, if you had an arrangement with he former owners whereby you had agreed to give them something and did not, they'd be all over you with a lawsuit for bad faith, preditory practices, fraud, bad breath, poor dresser, cross-dresser, (OK now I've gone over the line) or anything that they possibly use to make you a bad guy and them a victim. Merely do your job, report the event, file for the money, and get on with business. That's what we buy insurance for. Please report back to us how it turns out, ok?
