taxesIn Reply to: Re: Inquire at the county tax assessor's office (nt) posted by Chris on April 26, 2008 at 9:39 PM well, here is something i know about - one of the few things - lol. you certainly can not keep the old tax basis. the county will try to get as much as they can from you. unless one is related or meets one of the qualifications, property is always re-assessed at its current value, when it changes hands. when i took over the land in san diego, i got an appraised value at higher than i could sell it, and way higher than the trustee value. i wasnt trying to get it at the old value, but at a new fair value. i sent them a copy of the trustee sale amount, and then told them that their appraised value was too high. and i also told them that i had a very simple solution. if they wanted to hold onto that appraised value, i would be very happy to deed the property to the county in exchange for a check in the amount that they were appraising it at. they were very nice to me, sent me forms for appeal. but when i paid my taxes based on their bloated value, i have not heard back from them. so that issue is unresolved. i suspect i am gonna see the same problem with both sacramento properties. i also suspect that we are gonna see a class-action lawsuit against all the counties in california, because i suspect that they are all pulling this same crap. and too many people are being affected. govts dont know how to budget themselves, and when their property taxes start to plummet, they are in a panic.
